ISHPEMING, Mich. (WZMQ) – An Ishpeming home built exclusively for middle income buyers is going on the market soon. The home is made possible by the Missing Middle Housing Program. It’s designed to provide affordable housing for people who are not low income, but not high income either. The program, administered by the Michigan State Housing Development Authority, secures grant money from the Federal American Rescue Plan through the Marquette County Land Bank. The Missing Middle Program provides funds to defer the cost of construction, allowing the homes to be sold at an affordable price. housing specialist Antonio Adan with the Marquette County Landbank explains the benefits of the program.
“So, we call that missing middle because it’s the sector that’s not low income, but it’s not market rate.” Said Aden. “So it’s right in the middle and it’s missing middle because a lot of builders have shied away from building this type of housing because it’s so cost prohibitive to sell it at a profit. So with the help of the grant, we can actually offset the cost and make sure that it goes to a family that lives in the area.”
