MARQUETTE, Mich. (WZMQ) – The Mine Safety and Health Administration held a safety training for new miners at Northern Michigan University. The class covers topics like introduction to workplace, fall protection, and introduction to confined space. These classes are held for contractors, heavy machinery operators, and owners under MSHA regulations.
Although these classes talk about safety measures, the facilitator of this class wants people to leave this training with safety at the forefront of their everyday lives.
“It’s reduced accidents by at least 90% or more and it helps people both at work,” says Robert Mager, facilitator “But it helps them at home to be safe because twice as many accidents happens at home. As much I am concerned about their mine safety, I’m also concerned about their home safety.”
This training is federally mandated, and has been in existence since 1977. Anyone that wants to work in this field has to complete this 3-day 8 hour course.
There are several mines open in the Upper Peninsula and those who successfully complete the training will have the necessary skills in accordance with MSHA.
