RAPID RIVER, Mich. (WZMQ) – While Rapid River’s 51st Memorial Day celebration did not go entirely as planned, the community still came together to honor and support those who served their country.
Following steady rains throughout the first half of the day, the annual parade was canceled “due to safety concerns and weather.” The Rapid River Festivals & Events Facebook page informed residents that although the rain lessened shortly after the parade’s scheduled time, the parade permit and time could not be changed the day of the event.
Some activities did go on as planned in Masonville Township Park, including live music, a beer garden, and the annual barbecue competition.
Barbecue competitors cooked up their dish of choice on the grill. Attendees could purchase tickets to taste each one, and the first 24 to purchase tickets got to vote for their favorite dish to win. Winners received prizes from Rapid River Knifeworks.
Proceeds from the barbeque competition will go to the local American Legion post and the Upper Peninsula Honor Flight.
“It’s always what we can do for the community, and these guys are donating their time all day to be out here in the rain,” said barbecue competition organizer Bobbi Ryan. “It’s important to do stuff for the community, and the veterans especially. That’s why we’re here. We’re here because and we can do this stuff because of them.”
Due to the time it would take organizers to get the necessary permits approved, the Memorial Day parade will not be rescheduled. However, the annual kickball game and other events will be held at a later date.
