ISHPEMING TOWNSHIP, Mich. – Four people are recovering after a canoe overturned in an Ishpeming Township lake Wednesday.
The Marquette County Sheriff’s Office says it happened on Deer Lake just after 8:30 p.m. The Marquette County Special Operations Unit was dispatched to an overturned canoe about 400 yards from the shore with four people in the water.
The two who entered the water to help were wearing life jackets, but the two in the canoe were not. The two with life jackets were able to swim back to shore. They were put in a fire truck that had arrived on scene to keep warm and be evaluated for hypothermia.
The two people who were with the canoe were brought on board by the sheriff’s department boat and then transferred to EMS.
All four were taken to UP Health System – Bell for evaluation for hypothermia. The canoe was recovered from the water by the Special Operations Unit.
The sheriff’s department was assisted on the scene by the sheriff’s department road patrol, Ishpeming Township Fire, Rescue 131, and UPHS EMS.
The sheriff’s department reminds everyone to wear a life jacket at all times when recreating on the water, and always tell someone where you will be.
