Iron Mountain preps for second annual Millie Hill Enduro mountain bike race

IRON MOUNTAIN, Mich. (WZMQ) – Locals are gearing up for a weekend of adrenaline-pumping action as Iron Mountain readies itself for the second annual Millie Hill Enduro Bike Race. Proudly sponsored by U.P. Sport and Spoke, this year’s event promises even more excitement with the addition of a new race class.

Jon Bruen, the President of the Iron Hills Cycling team, shared his enthusiasm for the upcoming event: “There’s going to be two classes this year, so kind of more of a beginner class and more of an advanced class. The beginner will be over at Pine Mountain. If you’re doing the sport class – the beginner class-  it’ll all be at Pine Mountain. You’ll just go there. If you’re doing the advanced class, you’ll meet at the Northside Ballpark, just like last year.”

Racers can expect an upgraded trail experience, thanks to two new jumps built by MXS Productions and various trail improvements spearheaded by Bruen himself, Brian Trevarthan, and other local riders. Support from the Dickinson Trail Network and equipment provided by Midway Rentals ensures a smoother ride for participants. Plus, a cutting-edge chip timing system adds to the excitement, ensuring more accurate race results.

“We encourage spectators to come check it out, and anyone interested in trying a fun mountain bike race to participate,” added Bruen. “It’ll be a good time, just like all of our events. We’re here to have fun and show off our trails. There’s plenty going on in Iron Mountain that weekend.”

The races kick off on the morning of June 8th, setting the stage for a day filled with outdoor thrills. But the excitement doesn’t end there, as downtown Iron Mountain has plans to keep the summer vibes going well into the evening.

Kenzie Williamsen, Iron Mountain DDA Event Coordinator, highlighted the collaborative spirit of the weekend: “The Iron Hills Cycling team started that last year and partnered with us because it was on the same day. Their event is in the morning. Ours is in the afternoon, so we thought it would be a good way to get tourists here too, because some bikers come from all over the place. So we are partnering with them again this year.”

As an added bonus, racers participating in the Enduro race will enjoy perks such as discounted entry to Brewfest from noon-5 p.m. CST, and free admission to the Sandstone Terrace, where live entertainment awaits: in the evening after Brewfest wraps, Jordan Blanchard will perform on the rooftop of the Sandstone Terrace starting at 6 p.m. CST, with just a $5 cover charge for general admission.

Brewfest promises to be a highlight of the weekend, with a lineup of vendors offering a variety of beverages for sampling, and Curious Pig as the main food vendor, curating options to pair with the brews. From local favorites like 51st State Brewing in Kingsford, to out-of-state breweries, there’s something for every palate. Alpha, a favorite, will be there, and Barrel and Beam from Marquette will be on the scene. Oddfellows right downtown is joining the fun this year and will be providing non-alcoholic options, and Iron Fish is back with some whiskey, gin, and cocktail options.

Williamsen emphasized the exclusivity of Brewfest, stating, “This is an event that is only for 21 and up. Our volunteers included. So this means no babies, no toddlers, no 18-year-olds… you must be 21 or older to get into this event,” adding that “Brewfest is a capped attendance. We keep it at 500 people or fewer. We want to try and make it an exclusive environment,” she shared.

“Anybody who wants to just come to Brewfest, if you’re not an Enduro racer, our admission is $40 for samplers, and then $10 for DD tickets. So a sampling ticket will get you a small glass – it’s 4 ounces, and then you get 14 drink tokens, and you’ll go around and try different samples of different beverages.”

With activities planned throughout the day and into the evening, including live music by Flagship Romance, the return of Michael LoDuca, and games at Brewfest like cards, cribbage, and “Tipsyland” (an adult spin on Candyland), Iron Mountain is poised to deliver a memorable weekend for both racers and spectators alike.

Racers are encouraged to sign up before May 23rd to take advantage of discounted entry fees, with prices currently set at $25 for the sport class and $35 for the open class.

“We do need volunteers,” emphasized Williamsen. “The volunteers have to be 21 or older, and I have to have volunteer pourers for every station… we need a minimum of 12 people for a shift. I’m looking for around 20 more people. I have 10 signed up so far.”
