ISHPEMING, Mich. (WZMQ) – Hundreds gathered Sunday at Ishpeming high school to celebrate the Hematite’s girls basketball team’s state championship.
The girls won the District 4 state title last month defeating Kingston at the Breslin Center in Lansing. The championship is the first girls basketball state title in Ishpeming’s history.
Seven players will graduate from the team this year, but head coach Ryan Reichel is hopeful for the future.
“As soon as we got on the bus from that win, we started thinking about next year, that is how a coach’s brain works and we are just lucky that we have some really good ground work established through this season and hopefully we can keep building something great here,” remarked Reichel.
The Ishpeming city council will vote on a proclamation this week to make April 7th Hematite Day in honor of the team’s accomplishment.
