ALLOUEZ TOWNSHIP, Mich. (WZMQ) – Two Houghton County residents were injured in a single-vehicle crash in Keweenaw County Wednesday evening.
The Keweenaw County Sheriff’s Office says it happened around 8 p.m. on US-41 near the north end of Cliff Drive. Deputies say the vehicle was driving at a high rate of speed when it lost control on the gradual corner south of Cliff Dr.
The vehicle crossed the centerline and onto the east shoulder, hitting a traffic sign and soil embankment before going airborne and rolling several times before coming to rest on the shoulder of the roadway.
A 49-year-old Calumet Township man, who was driving, and a 48-year-old Calumet Township woman, who was the passenger, were taken to UP Health System – Portage for treatment.
Excessive speed and alcohol are believed to be factors. The crash remains under investigation.
Residents passing by gave first aid and alerted emergency personnel. Deputies were also assisted by Allouez Township First Responders and Fire Department, Mercy Ambulance, Calumet Township Fire Department, and Superior Service Towing.
