ISHPEMING, Mich, (WZMQ) – Kids and teens up to 19 years old took over the Al Quaal recreation area in Ishpeming today for the 2024 Junior Noquemanon Ski Marathon.
This year the Junior and Adaptive races were both held this afternoon unlike previous years, due to concerns about trail conditions.
Organizers say they had a record number of pre-registrations and saw a steady number of races register at the door.
Junior Noquemanon Co-Director Maureen McFadden said even though these races are smaller than the main one, they are just as important.
“You can’t have the big race without doing and teaching the smaller race first,” said McFadden. “If we want to keep having the big Noque race we have to have the young athletes starting and doing the junior Noque and it’s integral in making everybody involved, the whole community involved.”
The Noquemanon Ski Marathon begins tomorrow morning at the Superior Dome.
