MARQUETTE, Mich. (WZMQ) – On Monday evening, the Marquette Area Public School Board finally voted through the new nickname for Marquette High School, the “Sentinels.”
After 6 months of decision-making and over 2000 suggestions, “Sentinels” was voted through on a 6 to 1 majority at Monday night’s board meeting. The name pays tribute to the Marquette Junior Hockey team as they were previously called the Marquette Sentinels.
The board believes the guardian and protector meanings that go along with the word sentinel will create new school pride for the students. The nickname took effect immediately following the approval.
“It’ll be interesting to see like what kinds of images we can pull into the new mascot and the new logo, sentinel can be a very positive thing it’s a guardian a look out you’re looking out for your classmates,” commented MAPS Board President Kristen Cambensy.
Although the name has been decided upon, the MAPS board is already asking community members to send in suggestions for the visual of the new mascot. Click here to send in your suggestion for the new Marquette Sentinel Mascot.
