ESCANABA, Mich. (WZMQ) – The Michigan Attorney General’s Office has been appointed as the special prosecutor in the matter of People v Tavaris Jackson.
In August, a judge determined there was probable cause for three charges against 33-year-old Jackson, who is accused of murdering pregnant 22-year-old Harley Corwin. The charges are for open murder, felony possession of a firearm at the time of the murder, and assault intentionally causing the death of a fetus.
According to a press release from Delta County Prosecutor Lauren Wickman, on October 30, the People were served with a motion by Jackson’s defense counsel. The motion argued that Wickman could be a potential witness in the case, citing her involvement and assistance with the investigation at the scene where a search warrant seeking evidence in the homicide case was executed.
Wickman submitted the matter to the state Attorney General’s Office to determine if a special prosecutor should be appointed. It was determined that the Attorney General’s Office would be assigned as the special prosecutor in the case.
Wickman stated in her press release, “I want to commend law enforcement for their persistence during the investigation. I would also like to thank the family of Harley Corwin, for understanding the current situation, and knowing that the Michigan Attorney General’s Office is more than capable for the pursuit of justice for Harley and her unborn child.”
All future court appearances and trials will be handled by the Michigan Attorney General’s Office.
