ISHPEMING, Mich. (WZMQ) – One of the many sports that breeds excitement this far north is ski jumping, and it even happens without the snow. Earlier this week, the Ishpeming Ski Club began its fall practice. Athletes practice on an artificial turf that the club comments mimic the feeling of jumping in real snow.
Training this time of year gives athletes the chance to get their wings stretched and provides more reliable weather. One jumper says during the summer not only is the weather more predictable, but there’s also no grooming needing to be done, giving athletes more time to train.
“During the summer we jump on the plastic and the steel tracks so it’s a lot less maintenance,” commented Ski Club Jumper Isaac Larson.
