BARK RIVER, Mich. (WZMQ) – As the school year approaches, Bark River-Harris High School is looking forward to introducing a new winter sport.
Gymnastics will be available to girls in 9th through 12th grades. Practices will be held at Triple A Gymnastics in Escanaba.
Bark River-Harris will become one of only five high schools in the Upper Peninsula to offer a gymnastics program.
Lisa Jorasz–program organizer and mother of a gymnast–is proud that the school can offer a new athletic opportunity for female students.
“It’s individualized and it’s a team sport, so self-discipline to work out and get stronger but there’s also camaraderie with the team aspect,” she said.
Jorasz’s daughter Zoey, a freshman this year, has been in gymnastics since she was four. She is excited to continue her training as she enters high school.
“I’ve gotten a lot out of it, like teamwork and working with other girls, being supportive of everyone else,” Zoey said. “I just love this sport and I’m super excited to do it this year.”
The gymnastics season begins at the end of October. It will continue through March.
Jorasz says Bark River-Harris is open to co-oping with neighboring schools for the gymnastics program.
