ISHPEMING, Mich. (WZMQ) – Happening Saturday, August 5, over 50 vendors from the Northwest are expected to make their way to the UP for the Ishpeming Gem and Mineral Show, presenting rocks, minerals, and even amethyst gems to the UP community. It’s the 47th annual hosted by the Ishpeming Mineral and Rock Club.
The Mineral Club added a children’s scavenger hunt and a treasure dig back in 2021, where kids have to dig through a big pile of sand finding little bits of iron ore and copper.
Organizers commented that this gem show has always been about giving vendors a chance to show off their craft but has now evolved to be quite educational as well.
“I think probably the biggest takeaway that I see from hearing from most families is how family friendly it is and how much their children have learned and they have learned we usually get about half a dozen new members every year as a result from the show,” commented the Ishpeming Mineral Club President Kirsten Maki.
In addition to the vendor fair, the mineral club is also hosting a silent auction, where community members can start their collection.
The free event is held at the Ishpeming Elks Lodge (597 Lakeshore Dr.) from 9:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. There will also be tours on Friday, August 4 and Sunday, August 6.
