LANSING, Mich. (WZMQ) – Sexual orientation and gender identity and expression are now protected under Michigan law. Governor Gretchen Whitmer signed the expansion of The Elliott Larsen Civil Rights act into law Thursday afternoon.
This expansion adds protection from discrimination to those within the LGBT community in employment, housing, education, and access to public accommodations.
In Marquette an anti-discrimination ordinance was adopted back in 2015, advocates for The LGBT community in Marquette say it’s a big deal that these protections now extend throughout the state, and that the difference may not be felt in Marquette, but the statewide protections from discrimination are important to The LGBT community as more laws are passed across the us criminalizing traditions within The LGBT community.
