Stabenow, Democrats Continue to Push for Abortion Rights

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Democrats in congress are once again pushing for the right to an abortion. Last summer, the Supreme Court struck a ruling down which legalized abortions nationwide. Now they’re worried states will pass their own anti-abortion legislation.

Just days ago, thousands of people from across the US including Michigan’s Upper Peninsula and Erie, Pennsylvania, made their way to D.C. to take part in the March for Life event. It’s an anti-abortion event that was created following the Supreme Court decision on Roe v. Wade, which legalized abortion nationally. But now that decision has been struck down, Senate democrats said the fight is far from over.

“On Sunday what would’ve been the 50th anniversary of Roe v. Wade, America mourned,” said Sen. Chuck Schumer (D- NY). “America mourned. We mourned the fact that millions of Americans now have less rights than their mothers and grandmothers. We mourned the loss of individual freedom.”

“For 50 years we had that protection but now that national protection under the Supreme Court is gone,” said Sen. Debbie Stabenow (D- MI).

Following the court’s decision to strike down Roe, some republicans have proposed legislation that would essentially be a national abortion ban.

“This was a clear message from MAGA republicans to women across the country: your body, their choice,” said Sen. Schumer.

Even though the democrats said they will advocate to pass legislation codifying Roe into law, republicans are in control of the House and that kind of legislation is unlikely to pass there.

“So the bottom line really is this is about you, it’s about each of us to make our own decisions, it’s not about right winged politicians, it’s not about right winged judges,” said Sen. Stabenow. “Its about in America you make your own reproductive decisions, period. That’s what this is about.”
