UPDATE: woman killed in home explosion identified

HANCOCK TOWNSHIP, Mich. (WZMQ) – The Houghton County Sheriff’s Office has identified the woman who was killed in a home explosion Tuesday morning.

The sheriff’s office says 64-year-old Deborah Mann, of Hancock Township, died in the explosion and subsequent fire.

The cause of the explosion remains under investigation.

Tuesday update:

The Houghton County Sheriff’s Office confirms a woman was killed in a home explosion Tuesday morning in Hancock Township.

The sheriff’s office says when crews arrived on the scene, they learned that the female resident of the home was unaccounted for and possibly inside the home.

The woman’s husband was able to exit the home and was taken to Aspirus Keweenaw Hospital where he was treated and released for unknown injuries.

A body matching the description of the 64-year-old female resident was found inside the home. She was pronounced dead at the scene. Her name is being withheld pending an autopsy and identification.

The Michigan State Police Fire Investigator was called to the scene. The cause of the explosion and fire is still under investigation.

The Houghton County Sheriff’s Office was assisted by, Michigan State Police Fire Investigation Unit, Calumet Township Fire, Quincy Franklin Fire, Allouez Township Fire, Hubbell Fire, Tamarack City Fire, Mercy EMS, REA Power, MJO Contracting, Superior Search and Rescue, and Houghton County Medical Examiner’s Office.

The Houghton County Sheriff’s Office wishes to thank all of the volunteers and the local businesses who donated food and water to the volunteers on scene.

One person was hospitalized after a possible home explosion Tuesday morning, according to the Houghton County Sheriff’s Office.

Deputies were dispatched to a home on M-203 in Hancock Township around 9 a.m. for a possible building explosion and fire.

When deputies arrived on scene, along with multiple fire departments, the house was destroyed and on fire.

One person was taken to Aspirus Keweenaw Hospital in Laurium. The extent of their injuries is unknown.

The state fire marshal is on the way to the scene. The incident remains under investigation.
