A Delta County woman pleaded guilty as charged to a felony count of animal cruelty and a misdemeanor for operating an unregistered animal shelter Wednesday, according to the county prosecutor’s office.

Michigan State Police discovered Rebecca Johnson had a large number of malnourished dogs and noticed a strong smell of feces on her property when they were responding to an incident in August 2020.

A total of 135 dogs and 23 horses were found on Johnson’s property.

Many of the dogs were pregnant, which led to a total of nearly 200 dogs under the care of the Delta Animal Shelter.

Johnson’s case was scheduled to go to trial May 2.

She will be sentenced July 2.
