WASHINGTON, D.C. – Over the weekend President Donald Trump said he rejected Iran’s latest cease fire deal. It would’ve reopened the Strait of Hormuz and allow for peace talks to continue. Some Republicans who are in tight races this November are calling for the war to end.
The peace proposal would’ve lasted about seven days to reopen the Srait and allow for talks to continue, is the latest development in this war which has gone through a rollercoaster of military strikes, peace proposals and mixed messaging. Reports state the latest proposal also would’ve required the US to release frozen iranian assets and waive sanctions on Iranian oil and lift the blockade on Iran.
The President said mediators have met today but didn’t elaborate on any movement for the war and possible peace deal:
“We’re gonna win,” Trump said in the Oval Office on Monday. “As far as I’m concerned, it’s gonna be one way or the other. It’s gonna go pretty quickly.”
The President has suggested that Iran is trying to keep the war going through the midterm elections to hurt him and Republicans. Some Republicans in closely watched races like the Michigan and Ohio Senate races have publicly stated that the war in Iran should end. Political scientists say the war has become increasingly unpopular among Americans. Economists and petroleum experts said the war has contributed to the rise in food and energy prices.
