CBS HEALTHWATCH (WZMQ) – The case for expanding access to weight-loss drugs and the foods to avoid to protect against diabetes. Michael George has the day’s top health stories.
Avoiding ultra-processed foods and exercising can cut the risk of type 2 diabetes, even in people genetically predisposed to the disease. A study in the u-k found people who did moderate to vigorous exercise regularly and had a diet low in ultra-processed foods, which includes many pre-made and packaged foods, were 70 percent less likely to develop type 2 diabetes.
Millions of people worldwide could protect their heart health by taking popular weight loss drugs. A Danish study found that many people who are technically considered overweight but aren’t eligible for g-l-p-1 drugs could lower their risk for high blood pressure, diabetes, and cardiovascular disease by taking the drugs. The study suggests expanding access to the medications could save lives.
Underweight people are far more likely to die after emergency surgery. A University of Chicago study found that 1 in 10 underweight and frail people die after going through emergency general surgery. In contrast, people who are obese had a better chance of surviving surgery. However, the study’s authors say health issues connected with obesity could lower patients’ survival rate.
