MARQUETTE, Mich. (WZMQ) – Long before the demolition of the Marquette General Hospital, many of the houses in its surrounding property had to be physically moved for an expansion in the 1980’s.
On Wednesday afternoon as part of the Senior Support Series, a presentation was given about those houses in a very packed Marquette Regional History Center. Throughout four separate moves, at least 23 houses were relocated across the city, bringing family history along with each one.
Local historians and both current and old residents had the chance to share photos and stories about these 1920’s and 30’s homes. This incuded MRHC’s own Research Librarian, Beth Gruber.
“It’s a unique story. These are houses that are still lived in, I live in one of them actually,” she explained. “People find it fascinating, so why not share them?”
After the presentation, the crowd was also able to share their own recollections around the MGH. The next installation of the Senior Support Series will take place in early December.
