Alcohol linked to rising cancer rates

Alcohol blamed for increase in cancer rates

MIAMI, Fla. (WZMQ) – Cancer deaths linked to alcohol abuse have doubled in recent decades. A University of Miami study found more than 23,000 Americans died from alcohol-linked cancer in 2023, compared to 11,000 in 1990. Researchers stress that, contrary to popular belief, alcohol causes more than just liver cancer- it’s also linked to colorectal, breast, esophageal, and pancreatic cancer.

Among people ages 2o to 54, colorectal cancer was the leading alcohol attributable cancer death in men. Breast cancer was the leading cancer death related to alcohol for women.

Mental health conditions that develop after experiencing a traumatic event can raise the risk of heart attack and stroke. A study in Denmark looked at people who experienced trauma and were later diagnosed with p-t-s-d, substance abuse, depression, and anxiety. They found those patients had a higher risk of cardiovascular events, including death, highlighting how important it is to monitor physical health after a traumatic event.

For men with prostate cancer, the type of fat they eat could add years to their life. Harvard public health researchers found that prostate cancer patients who ate more saturated fat had a 24 percent greater risk of death, not just from prostate cancer, but other cancers as well. But men who ate more plant-based fats, like those from nuts and seeds, had a 16% *lower* rate of death.
