NEGAUNEE, Mich. (WZMQ) – It’s been a record breaking summer for the Negaunee Public Library. With over 250 sign-ups for its summer reading program, they’ve been on the right track for a busy book sale this week.
On Thursday, thousands of hard covers and paperbacks were on sale by donation at the Negaunee Senior Center from 9 a.m. until 3 p.m. For over 20 years, the Friends of the Negaunee Public Library has held the book sale in the middle of the Pioneer Days festivities, to raise additional funds for the library.
“It increases awareness to have events like this,” said Library Director, Jessica Holman. “I’ve seen a lot of kids come through today, and there have been a number of people from out of town, there’s a great interconnectedness”
With such a large collection, these books have to make it from the library to the senior center somehow. That’s where Negaunee football players step in, helping load close to two hundred boxes on Wednesday.
“It makes us feel important that we’re helping out,” said High School Quarterback, Kyle Waterman.
“The Friends wouldn’t be able to hold the book sale without the football team,” said Holman.
Following the book sale, the teams hauled everything left over, hopefully as a much lighter load.
