Kingdom of Wonders Medieval Circus visits Escanaba, Houghton, and Kingsford

ESCANABA, Mich. (WZMQ) – A one-of-a-kind traveling circus has made its way to the Upper Peninsula.

This week, the Kingdom of Wonders Medieval Circus set up the big top at the U.P. State Fairgrounds in Escanaba. The family-friendly show features acrobatics, stunts, comedy, and an engaging story about a witch, her dragon, a princess, and a brave knight.

“True, live entertainment is hard to come by these days,” said Kingdom of Wonders owner Benjamin Holland, who guests know better as Sir Dance a Lot. “Nowadays, everything’s on YouTube or Netflix, and it’s all on screens. There’s something about live entertainment that really can’t be replaced by that. You’re coming out and seeing something real. You’re feeling the music boom, you’re seeing the lights flash, and you’re seeing someone who’s been doing this their entire life doing something that is almost superhuman. I think it’s something that really speaks out, especially to a younger audience.”

Through June 2, Escanaba performances take place at 6 p.m. Thanks to sponsorships by the Delta County Chamber of Commerce and the U.P. State Fair Authority, tickets are free.

“It’s the only free circus in the entire world,” Holland said. “Donations are accepted so that we can keep it that way, but we never charge anybody. It is really a great time, so bring out the whole family for a full hour and a half of fun that you’re not going to be able to get anywhere else.”

The Kingdom of Wonders travels all across the continental United States. The circus will entertain audiences in Houghton July 4 through 9, followed by a stop in Houghton on July 11 and 12.
