HANCOCK, Mich. (WZMQ) – Hancock is celebrating its Finnish heritage this week with the annual Juhannus summer solstice festival.
The multi-day celebration marks Finland’s traditional midsummer holiday.
It kicked off tonight with a welcome reception honoring Finnish culture, followed by the opening of the 4th annual folk school mid-summer art exhibit at The Finnish American Heritage Center.
Events include the raising of a midsummer pole, live music and dancing, sauna experiences, cultural demonstrations, a beach party, and the traditional bonfire along the waterfront.
This year’s festival also highlights Hancock’s role as the 2026 Finno-Ugric Capital of Culture, showcasing the region’s deep Finnish roots and international cultural connections.
The Juhannus celebration runs through the weekend in and around Hancock.
