MANISTIQUE, Mich. (WZMQ) – A unique campground is officially open for business in Manistique.
Located at 6596 W US-2, Campfire Shores is now welcoming guests for camping, glamping, and everything in between. Formerly the site of a Ramada Inn and campground, the property has been blighted for about 15 years.
“It’s been abandoned and vandalized for a long time,” said Campfire Shores Owner Jill Hoffmann. “There have been lots of different things in here—a meat market at one point, some medical offices. It’s been in and out of some rehab, but nothing really stuck after the Ramada. We have plans to continue to work on that building over time.”
Hoffman is excited to breathe new life into the land. Her goal is to offer guests new experiences, like camping in an environmentally-friendly eco-dome.
“They don’t use as many building materials as other things,” she explained. “They are semi-permanent structures, and they hold up over winter. They have big, beautiful bay windows inside so that you can be in nature while camping or glamping. They’re like a fancy tent with furniture.”
Guests have direct access to acres of hiking trails, as well as ATV trails. There are also common areas, picnic tables, fire pits, and a bathhouse.
Hoffmann describes Campfire Shores as a place for every type of camper.
“I just want people to feel that there’s always a way that you can come out and enjoy nature,” she said. “You don’t have to have all of the equipment; you don’t have to take a lot of time away. You can just pack up your kids or your pets and have the comforts of home but still hear all the beautiful sounds of nature, commune with other people that like nature, get out on the trails, and see what the best of the U.P. has to offer.”
