MARQUETTE, Mich. (WZMQ) – Letter carriers in Marquette County are gearing up to help “Stamp out hunger” this Saturday, May 9th.
The annual food drive, now in its 30th year, is the largest single-day food drive in the nation, collecting more than 1.8 billion pounds of food to date.
Residents are encouraged to leave a bag of non-perishable items, like canned goods, pasta, rice, or cereal, next to their mailbox before regular mail delivery.
Donations will go to local food banks, including the Salvation Army and Saint Vincent de Paul, helping families facing food insecurity across the area.
“Usually in the spring, around now, the pantries have been cleaned out, and not a lot of people are thinking about it, or not a lot of donation drives. So this comes at a critical time for most pantries,” said Andrew Rickauer, Executive Director of The United Way of Marquette County
Organizers say that with rising economic challenges, community support is more important than ever.
