“No Kings 3″ March 28: Organizers cite concerns over democracy, voting rights

LANSING, Mich. (WZMQ) – A coalition of Michigan activists and advocacy groups is planning a series of “No Kings” protests across the state this weekend, part of a broader national and international day of demonstrations.

Organizers say the events, scheduled for Saturday, March 28, will focus on a range of issues, including voting rights, U.S. foreign policy, immigration enforcement, and economic concerns.

“Our message is crystal clear,” said Audrey Bouillaud, founder of We the People Dissent. “We are united in our opposition to the war in Iran, threats to our right to vote, and opposition to ICE.”

Organizers described the protests as a response to growing threats to democratic institutions and public accountability. Tarun Patel, an organizer based in northern Michigan, emphasized economic challenges facing residents across the state.

“We’re all wondering how we’re going to pay to go to the doctor, how we’re going to keep food on the table for our family,” Patel said. “These are the basic building blocks of a decent life.”

Voting rights advocates also raised concerns about proposed legislation at both the federal and state levels. Angela Davenport of the Voting Access for All Coalition warned that new requirements could create barriers for eligible voters.

“This bill would remove millions of registered voters, requiring documents many people don’t have easy access to,” Davenport said. “This is what voter suppression looks like.”

Other speakers focused on infrastructure and energy concerns tied to the expansion of large-scale data centers in Michigan. Sean Weber of the Public Research Initiative said communities could face higher utility costs and environmental strain without stronger oversight.

“Michigan families are being asked to foot the bill through higher electric bills, strained water supplies, and rushed approvals that bypass public scrutiny,” Weber said.

Organizers say protests are planned in more than 100 communities across Michigan, with additional events scheduled nationwide and internationally.

“This Saturday … we will come together in over 100 towns,” said Sherry Maddow, a volunteer with Indivisible Michigan. “We reject fear as a weapon … we choose democracy and peace.”
