Michigan Veterans Mark 250th Marine Corps Birthday at State Capitol

LANSING, Mich. (WZMQ) – Marines, veterans, and state officials gathered at the Michigan State Capitol today to celebrate the 250th birthday of the United States Marine Corps.

The event featured the Marine Corps’ long-standing tradition of a ceremonial cake-cutting, where the oldest Marine passes a slice of cake to the youngest, a symbol of history, service, and unity.

Curtis Volkman, a Marine Corps member who left active duty in 2016, was honored as the youngest Marine present.

“Today is the 250th Marine Corps Birthday,” Volkman said. “It’s an honor to be a part of living history to uphold. The highest traditions of the Marine Corps. Without it, I would not have reached my full potential that I am today.”

Brian Love, director of the Michigan Veterans Affairs Agency and a proud Marine himself, called it a celebration of shared service across generations.

“Today is about celebrating the birth of what I would say is the strongest military organization,” Love said. “Marines are very, very passionate about our history and making sure we tell our stories.”

Love added that Marines around the world mark the day in their own way, whether in the desert, jungle, or at sea, and that it’s important to take a break to honor and celebrate all who serve.

“Today, we celebrate the Marines. Tomorrow we celebrate all veterans,” he said. “It is great to take a pause and appreciate those who serve our nation, those who raised their right hand and made the strong commitment to protect this nation.”
