Lt. Gov. Gilchrist responds to violence threats on his family home

LANSING, Mich. (WZMQ)- Lieutenant Governor Garlin Gilchrist says his family is safe after law enforcement responded to a credible bomb threat at his home earlier today.

In a statement, Gilchrist said the incident happened just one day after the shooting death of conservative activist Charlie Kirk and amid what he described as an “escalating pattern of political violence” in Michigan and across the country.

“The purpose of this violence is to silence, intimidate, and eliminate people and their voices from our society. That won’t work on me,” Gilchrist said. “We cannot tolerate political violence. We cannot excuse it. We cannot normalize it.”

The lieutenant governor said he is grateful to law enforcement for protecting his family and neighborhood and urged Michiganders to reject violent rhetoric and threats.

The incident comes as schools and public officials across the state report a rise in violent threats. Lawmakers and advocacy groups—particularly those on the political left—say the shooting of Kirk and the wave of targeted threats are part of a growing trend of politically motivated hostility that has left educators, parents, and community leaders on edge.

Gilchrist called on residents to “dig deep and commit to ending violence and creating a safe, healthy society,” saying progress will take difficult but necessary work.
