IRON MOUNTAIN, Mich. (WZMQ) – It was around 3:55 Saturday afternoon when a passerby spotted a man outside the Dickinson County Republican Committee Headquarters in Iron Mountain, apparently trying to light a glass bottle with a rag sticking out of it.

“We have never seen anything quite like this. It’s really kind of sad,” said building owner Raymond Broullire.

Police say surveillance footage shows the man struggling to ignite the makeshift device. When the rag wouldn’t Catch Fire, he allegedly threw the bottle at the window, where the bottle shattered and the window remained intact.

“If he had a little more knowledge about what he was doing, a little more oomph in his throw, we would have been in deep trouble,” said Broullire.

Police identified the suspect as 19-year-old Zane Arcand. They found him at his home, where he admitted to making the bottles in his driveway, hoping to ignite them and send a message against corruption.

“The fact that he threw that bottle directly at this window right under the Republican party sign tells me a lot,” explained Broullire.

Arcand is now charged with manufacturing explosives, possession of Molotov cocktails, causing property damage, and attempted arson. he was arraigned on Monday and remains in the Dickinson County Jail. His next appearance in court will be a preliminary hearing in August.
