ESCANABA, Mich. (WZMQ) – On June 21, a global event is making its way to the Upper Peninsula thanks to the Escanaba Downtown Development Authority (DDA).

Make Music Day originated in France in 1982, spreading to more than 120 countries over the years. Saturday will be the inaugural Make Music Escanaba event.

Performers of all ages and skill levels will be playing at shops and venues throughout town. Elmer’s County Market employees will perform in front of the store from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Students of Jim’s Music will hold a recital at the Escanaba Marketplace from noon to 2 p.m. Other performance locations include the East Ludington Gallery and the 11th Street Center Court.

DDA Chairperson and Nyman Jewelers owner Sue Parker says Escanaba’s participation in Make Music Day shows just how much the local music scene has grown in recent years.

“Craig Woerpel, our director at the DDA, has really been doing a lot to expand the music in our areas,” said Parker. “The Bonifas sponsors the Music Mondays in the Park, we have the City Band, and of course we have the Logjam coming up next weekend. It’s just to be a little part of something really big.”

Attendees and local residents are encouraged to make music of their own. Nyman Jewelers, located out 911 Ludington Street, will be handing out kazoos at no cost.

To see the full schedule of Make Music Escanaba performances and activities—which includes notable local artists like Phil Lynch, Jim Finlan, and the Remnants Barbershop Chorus—visit escanabadowntown.com.
