IRON MOUNTAIN, Mich. (WZMQ) – Iron Mountain’s Memorial Day observance began this morning with a parades, followed by a memorial service at the cemetery park organized by the Iron Mountain American Legion post to remember our nation’s veterans.
“We are gathered so we can remember their sacrifices and celebrate the fact that throughout our history, this great country produces such men and women and honor,” said Post Adjutant for American Legion Post 50 Robert Massicotte. “We must never forget them.”
The ceremony was well attended by veterans along with their friends and families, and included a few words from Massicotte.
“There are sports heroes, action heroes, and political heroes,” said Massicotte. “But is there any group more deserving of the title than the more than one million men and women who have sacrificed their lives in defense of this nation.”
The ceremony also included the placing of a wreathe on the veterans’ graves and a gun salute. One American Legion member Jerry Hicks said its important to remember the veterans of the past and of the future.
“We should never forget what our veterans did for us, and wat the future veterans could do for us,” said Hicks. “So I think its a good idea that we remember them at this time of year and we honor them.”
Massicotte said he was glad to see so many people and he hopes to see even morenext year.
