NEGAUNEE, Mich. (WZMQ) – To start the day, Negaunee held its annual Memorial Day parade down Iron Street in downtown. Patriotic residents lined the street as marching bands and dignitaries went by. The guest of honor and parade grand marshal was 96-year-old Korean War veteran Russell “Stubb” Williams, who serves as the chaplain for the Negaunee VFW Post 3165.
“It just gets bigger and bigger all the time. Yeah, bigger. Veterans, that’s it, it’s a good day for veterans,” said Korean War Veteran Russell “Stub” Williams.
The parade featured two marching bands, a Boy Scout troupe, and the requisite fire truck and other first responder vehicles. Although the parade was short, it was long on patriotism.
“We are, I think, getting a lot better at recognizing Memorial Day, and we’re pushing on to the 250th of the country. It’s time for all the families to look back at their own families as to what they did,” said longtime VFW member of Post 3165, Thomas Stanaway.
The Negaunee VFW then hosted a ceremony at the Negaunee Cemetery, a solemn occasion remembering our fallen heroes. With flags at half-staff, Local veterans recalled the history of Memorial Day and the men and women who made the ultimate sacrifice in service to this country.
