MARQUETTE, Mich. (WZMQ) – On Wednesday, the Citizens Serve Lake Superior nonprofit organization hosts a celebration at Ore Dock Brewery. This event brought attention to the steps made this year and the organization’s goals for next year.

The Citizens for a Safe and Clean Lake Superior Organization was started in 2020 by Marquette residents as a way to take action and protect the multiple bodies of water surrounding. The organization protects and improves the environmental resources of coastal habitats, shorelines, and Lake Superior.

Organizers share they are most proud of its work with the “Stop the Rocket” project this past year. The organization is also pivoting its focus to the protection of wetlands and threats they say are from mining. In this upcoming year, the organization plans to keep its attention on wetlands and mining as well as adding native eco-restoration.

“It’s what I love so much about Marquette and the U.P., we’re a really tight-knit community and events like this give me a chance to say hello and to hug everybody everybody I love,” Jane Fintkin, Citizens for a Safe and Clean Lake Superior director.

Citizens for a Safe and Clean Lake Superior are hosting a native plant and gardening event on Saturday at 10 a.m. located at Big Bay Pathway Trailhead. For information on more or future events go to Citizens for a Safe and Clean Lake Superior homepage.
