TRENARY, Mich. (WZMQ) – The turdy-first (31st) annual Trenary Outhouse Classic took over the small town this weekend.
For the past three decades thousands have flocked from all over the country to the small town of trenary. Famous for its toast, during the last Saturday in February, Trenary transforms into a speedway for toilets.
“We couldn’t be more excited, the fact that we have snow that we were able to bring in and get this race going was fantastic,” said Jim Dobbins, a member of the Trenary Race Committee.
Teams made up of friends, family, and co-workers build outhouses which are then put on sleds, some make the race a yearly tradition traveling to the Upper Peninsula for the occasion.
“It’s a 6 and a half hour drive every year,” remarked Andrew Laenen, who made the trip from the Detroit area to compete in the race.
Teams have gotten very creative with outhouse designs, and the outfits they wear as they push them down the track.
“You are cold either way so you might as well wear something that is gonna make you run fast,” added Leanen.
The lack of snow this winter presented challenges to the race’s organizers. this year they bussed in snow from a nearby school.
“We had the grooming service come in Saturday to get it smooth, and it is a fast track, we are gonna see some fast times,” commented Dobbins.
This year’s race brought over 2 thousand spectators to Trenary, coming from all over the midwest, one dan trenary, as in the town, came back just to see the event.
“It’s awesome, it’s exciting, a friend of mine and I drove 8 hours from Fort Wayne Indiana, it’s bigger than I thought, to see all the support is awesome it’s neat,” said Dan Trenary.
Organizers are already working to plan the turdy-second (32nd) Outhouse Classic.
