Marquette organization raises money for first responders

MARQUETTE, Mich, (WZMQ) – The Marquette County Police and Firefighter’s Fund held their annual Police and Firefighter’s Ball fundraiser on Saturday.

The night was filled with food dancing, a raffle, and a silent auction.

The ball is the organization’s main fundraiser throughout the year and helps support police, firefighters, and thier families.

Marquette County Police and Firefighter’s Fund President Ashley Musselmen said this year the fund helped both departments upgrade their equipment.

“A lot of the fire departments were able to buy heat thermal imaging cameras,” said Musselmen, “which help keep them safe when they have to go into a fire. We were able to help some of the police departments buy equipment to upgrade forensic computers, things of that sort.”

Musselmen said they are grateful for all the community support, and hope to be able to continue expanding their services in the future.

Imagine never having to pay property taxes again. The proposal would eliminate property taxes statewide, allowing homeowners and businesses to own their land without any ongoing government fees. But with property taxes funding everything from schools to public safety to roads, the big question is—where will that money come from? The plan calls for a bigger slice of state sales tax to be redirected to local governments. To help cover the gap, the petition also shifts 10% of state income, marijuana, alcohol, and tobacco tax revenue to cities and counties. sot Opponents OF THE PLAN worry it could jeopardize local funding. The petition is now gathering signatures for a spot on the 2026 ballot.
