MARQUETTE, Mich. (WZMQ) – The NMU Board of Trustees has approved the proposal of it’s five-year Master Facilities Plan, including a submission for a new arts facility.
After recently receiving similar funds for the construction of its College of Business project, the university’s next future project will be a Center for Creative Arts and Entrepreneurship. The project serves as a priority on the university’s 2028 Capital Outlay State Request, and is said to strengthen NMU’s role as a hub for arts and culture in the Upper Peninsula.
The $51.5 million request asks for $30 million from the state, with NMU handling the remaining $21.5 million. It includes renovations to aging facilities on campus, including 17,900 square foot upgrades to its Multimedia Production and Communication Studies departments, and a 30,000 square foot addition to its Blackbox theatre.
In full, the October 2026 five-year Facilities Master Plan, 2028 Capital Outlay Project Request, and 2027 Long Term Maintenance Project List unanimously passed 7-0.
