IRON MOUNTAIN, Mich. (WZMQ) – In a thrilling display of endurance and skill, the Shiver-Me-Timberstones Fat Tire bike race unfolded today, showcasing the Pine Mountain Ski and Golf resort as a hub for winter bike racing across the Midwest. The event, held at the Timberstones clubhouse near the resort’s new tubing hill location, drew enthusiastic spectators who cheered on the competitors as they tackled the challenging course.
The races commenced with a brisk 5.5-mile loop, followed by an arduous 11-mile crawl, separating the resilient from the faint-hearted. Despite the daunting nature of the course, only the strongest contenders persevered, with several racers completing one lap and opting out of the second.

Matt Fisher, representing Suamico Bike Co. from Green Bay, showcased remarkable tenacity, securing the second-place position. Delving into the intricacies of fat bike racing, Fisher praised the venue, despite the challenging conditions. “It’s a phenomenal venue,” he exclaimed, acknowledging the soft terrain that added an element of excitement to the race. “Conditions today were a little soft however, that’s kind of what makes it fun and that is fat bike racing,” he remarked, highlighting the essence of adaptability in the sport.
Expressing optimism for the future of the event, Fisher emphasized its potential to become a prominent fixture in the Midwest fat tire racing circuit. “I talked to Mike of U.P. sport and spoke about that,” he disclosed, envisioning the race as a cornerstone of the regional series. “You know, it would be cool to see this thing,” he remarked, underscoring the importance of its continuity.
With both Viehl and Fisher setting a precedent of resilience and determination, the Shiver-Me-Timberstones Fat Tire race captivated audiences and participants alike, solidifying its status as a premier winter sporting event. The snowshoe race concluded the festivities on a high note.
