MARQUETTE COUNTY, Mich. (WZMQ) – During a Marquette County Commission meeting on Tuesday, a last minute agenda item included the resignation of commissioner Karl Numinen, effective immediately.
Numinen, a long-time U.P. defense attorney, was appointed to the board in October 2025 to represent District 1. The commission was provided with no explanation as to why he made his recent decision, but by county regulations, it’s not a necessary factor in making that announcement.
County Clerk Linda Talsma says with elections on the horizon, the board is taking a quicker approach toward filling the vacant seat.
“There can be many reasons why someone would resign, and I don’t know what those reasons are, I did not ask,” she said. “If we had more time on our side I think the board would’ve decided to take resumes for 30 days, but time is of the essence in this situation.”
Applications are currently being accepted by the county until Tuesday, October 20, at 4 p.m. Applicants must be a registered voter in Marquette City, District 1 (From the City Boundary, to North of Wright Street, to East of Lincoln Avenue, to South of Fair Avenue, to East of McClellan Avenue, to North of Washington Street, to East of Fourth Street, to North of Fisher Street, to East of Front Street, to North of Whetstone Brook).
Resumes can be sent to the Marquette County Clerk’s Office at 234 W. Baraga Ave., Marquette, MI 49855.
The selected individual would hold an unexpired term until December 31st, before the newly elected candidate begins their term on January 1.
