Houghton shooting suspect faces premeditated murder charges, denied bond

HOUGHTON, Mich. (WZMQ) – The suspect involved in a premeditated homicide was being arraigned Friday in Houghton.

In the Houghton County 97th District Court Friday morning, 59-year-old Evan Dixon was arraigned for the fatal shooting of 53-year-old Theron Duncan.

Dixon faces a felony charge of homicide- first degree murder- premeditated, and one felony weapons charge. Dixon was also denied bond.

The Houghton Sheriff’s Office told WZMQ that the shooting took place at the Douglas House Saloon on Monday night. Not many details on what led to the shooting or the motive have been released at this time. “Going to deny pretrial release to Mr. Dixon, given the nature of the charges,” said Houghton County Court Judge Nicholas Daavettila.

Due to Daavettila’s working relationship history with the defendant, the court has chosen to seek a substitute in the case moving forward. This case will be taken over by the attorney general’s office until the Houghton County prosecutor takes over his role next month. “In light of that relationship, the court is finding it appropriate to disqualify itself from further involvement in the proceedings,” continued Daavettila.

The State Court administrative office has been informed of the judge’s recusal from the case and is actively seeking another judge to oversee the legal proceedings. A probable cause conference of the homicide case for Dixon is scheduled for December 1st, with a preliminary examination on December 8th.
