IRON MOUNTAIN, Mich. (WZMQ) – In Dickinson County, the Norway-Vulcan School District is seeing significant developments with regard to the school’s public health planning as a recent board agenda considered bringing on a new school nurse to its staff.

As the members of the school board gathered, they considered her 12 years of nursing experience, the majority of those years immersed in the realm of public health, Manier had previously lent her expertise to the Health Department, and the Marshfield Medical Center, Dickinson, focusing on youth-oriented community health planning and prevention. She has also had one-on-one experience with home-visits, assisting newborns and new moms postpartum.

The school board, in unanimous agreement, approved the hiring of Ruth Manier as its new school nurse. It marked a significant moment for the Norway-Vulcan School District, as they hadn’t had a school nurse in over a decade.

In the midst of the occasion, Ruth herself offered insights into her new role. She remarked, “So there’s been a long gap, so it’ll be kind of building up a program, figuring out what students need. So I think that’s also kind of the exciting challenge of getting a program up and running is where do we start, and where can we go.”

Manier is enthusiastic about working with the local youth population, and she eagerly anticipates the opportunity to work with students on a daily basis, adding vital public health education to the school’s programming.

“I think it’s going to be an honor and a blessing at the same time,” she added. “Being another person to kind of root them on and encourage them, I think that’s going to be such a privilege,” Manier stated.
