MARQUETTE, Mich. (WZMQ) – UPDATE: Marquette Area Public School board member Jennifer Klipp provided a statement to WZMQ on behalf of herself and Jennifer Ray:
“Jennifer Ray and I honor the democratic and lawful processes enshrined within Michigan’s election laws. As those processes unfold, we will continue to serve as school board trustees for Marquette Area Public Schools with integrity, fidelity, and evidence-based decision-making in order to address the myriad of opportunities and challenges MAPS currently faces. We are excited to continue our commitment to the MAPS community in the same spirit of dedication, professionalism, collaboration, and transparency as we have since we were sworn into office in January, 2021.”
Original story:
Recall language has been filed against two board members on The Marquette Area Public School Board, Jennifer Klipp and Jennifer Ray. On Wednesday August 16th, recall petitions were filed for ‘failure to retain the Redmen and Redette names for Marquette Senior High School by voting to retire the nicknames’ despite a survey from 2020 showing 59% of the district’s registered voters were in support of the nicknames.
This petition comes just a month after the 4-3 vote by the board to retire the Redman and Redette nicknames. With Cherryl Maddox-Smith, and Glenn Sarka also voting in favor of the names retirement.
The Marquette County Election Commission has scheduled a clarity hearing to discuss the clarity and factuality of the recall language filed against Klipp and Ray. The meeting will take place Friday, September 1st at 12pm in the Probate Courtroom on the ground floor of the Courtroom Annex.
WZMQ has reached out to the individual who filed the petition for comment and will continue to update this story.
