ESCANABA, Mich. (WZMQ) – On Thursday, the U.P. State Fair held a Native American Celebration.

The Hannahville Indian Community hosted the event, which featured the Woodland Sky Native American Dance Company. Dancers told stories of Native American history through their performances.

“Our Elders always say, ‘All human beings want to be understood and appreciated,'” said Dr. Brian Jackson, whose Ojibwe name is Chiayaabe Big Buck. “It looks like there’s many different ethnic backgrounds coming to share. I think it’s important to have these experiences and opportunities.”

Michelle Reed, manager of Woodland Sky Native American Dance Company, expressed her desire to share their art and past with others.

“It’s really important to teach about our culture,” said Reed. “Even though Hannahville Indian Community is so close to Escanaba, there is a big division between the communities that we can help bridge with things like this.”

The celebration included performers of all ages, showcasing several unique styles of dancing. Click here to learn more about Woodland Sky Native American Dance Company.
