HANNAHVILLE, Mich. (WZMQ) – On Wednesday, members of the Hannahville Indian Community gathered to raise awareness about a prominent health issue.
In observance of National Diabetes Month, the Hannahville Health Center held its 12th Annual Diabetes Walk at the Great Hall. Participants walked in memory of those who have died from the disease and in honor of those still living with it.
According to registered dietitian Tonya LaFave, diabetes is becoming increasingly common, especially within Indigenous communities.
“Native Americans are more at risk for developing diabetes, mainly type 2 diabetes,” LaFave said. “A lot of times there’s a family history of it, so a lot of people are affected. We’re just excited to be here today. Even though it’s kind of rainy, overcast, we’re getting a good group of people coming in.”
The Hannahville Health Center offers resources for patients with diabetes, including nutritional education and management techniques. To learn more, visit hannahvillehealthcenter.com or call (906) 466-2782.
