EAGLE HARBOR TOWNSHIP, Mich. (WZMQ) – Two people are critically injured after a crash late Wednesday night.
The Keweenaw County Sheriff’s Office says it happened around 11:30 p.m. on M-26 near Cat Harbor in Eagle Harbor Township. Deputies came upon the crash, which trapped the driver and passenger in the car.
Deputies say 21-year-old Jack Kilpela of Hancock was driving west on M-26 when he failed to negotiate a curve. The vehicle left the road and hit a tree.
Kilpela and an unidentified 21-year-old female passenger were both critically injured and had to be extricated from the vehicle.
Both were taken to Aspirus Keweenaw Hospital before being flown to UP Health System Marquette.
Alcohol and speed are believed to the factors in the crash. The crash remains under investigation.
Deputies were assisted by Michigan State Police, the Houghton County Sheriff’s Office, Eagle Harbor Volunteer Fire Department, Copper Harbor Volunteer Fire Department, and Eagle Harbor First Responders.
