Governor Whitmer visits Marquette for campaign rally

MARQUETTE, Mich. (WZMQ) – Over the weekend Governor Gretchen Whitmer visited Northern Michigan University as part of her re-election campaign.

Whitmer spoke outside of the Superior Dome alongside U.S. Sen. Gary Peters, D-Bloomfield Hills; Jenn Hill, Democratic state representative candidate for the 109th District; and Dr. Bob Lorinser, the Democratic candidate for the 1st Congressional District.

“The [Upper Peninsula] is an important part of Michigan,” Whitmer said. “I have always always loved the Upper Peninsula. You can not love it without loving the people that call it home.”

During the rally, Whitmer focused on her Upper Peninsula accomplishments over the past four years, emphasizing organizations and businesses such as the expansions of Calumet Electronics.

“It is just one example of cutting edge manufacturing that’s happening here in the [Upper Peninsula] that the State is actively involved in partnerships,” Whitmer said. “We gotta keep that moving forward.”

Other speakers at the rally voiced how the upcoming election is important and pushed for voters to get out and vote on November 8.

“We are making a big choice on November 8 between a party that wants to get things done, which is what our rally was about today, and a party that really has been focused on division and that is not what our country needs right now we need to come together,” Hill said.

With Marquette being home to Northern Michigan University, many students were in attendance at the rally including Kate Gunville, founder and president of Northern Votes.

“There are issues that are going to affect our lives whether we want them to or not and we need to voice our opinions and use what we have and we have our vote and we need to keep using that and show up in numbers and build the habit of voting frankly,” Gunville said. “We are going to have to carry this on the rest of our lives and if we haven’t started we need to get in the habit of starting now.”

Whitmer will continue her campaign rally until the Michigan general election on November 8.
