Regionals on the horizon for Wildcats
MARQUETTE, Mich. – The Northern Michigan women’s wrestling team was in action on Saturday night, matching up with Grand Valley State at Vandament Arena. The Wildcats fell 27-18, wrapping up the season at an even 4-4 in duals.
The first dual took place at 145, with GVSU’s Emily Medford defeating Samatha Chaon by fall at 1:39 to give GVSU a 5-0 lead.
Northern answered with a win from Sophia Bassino at 160, also claiming a victory by fall at 4:56 to even the score at 5’s. Bassino trailed 6-0 entering the second round, but turned it around and got the crowd on their feet with a monster takedown leading to the fall to seal it.
The Lakers responded with victory at 180. Sabrina Nauss defeated Mickaela Keane, again by fall, at 0:54. The score was 10-5 GVSU.
A high-intensity battle ensued at 207, with GVSU’s Aaliya Grandbery taking down Kailyn Garrett by fall in the final seconds at 5:44. The Lakers led 15-5.
NMU’s Bryn Sandhu made the score 15-10 with a win by forfeit at 110.
At 117, Yu Sakamoto got the best of her opponent with a 13-2 tech fall win in 2:29. That win lessened the gap to 16-14 in favor of the Lakers.
Grand Valley was able to widen the gap with back-to-back wins by fall at 124 and 131. Kiley Tabolo defeated Zhivanna Magdaleno at 3:58 and Aspen Blasko bested Sharon Leon at 0:46 to make it 26-14 GVSU.
In the final bout of the night, Northern ended with a win from Alissa Caltagirone, who earned a 12-1 triumph by tech fall (2:35) to make the final score 27-18.
One exhibition took place at 160, with Ruby Joseph falling to Claire Agostini by tech fall 10-0 in 0:59.
