Tomashek pours in 32 points
HOUGHTON, Mich. – The Michigan Tech men’s basketball team remains unbeaten at home after a 77-69 win over Davenport on Thursday. The teams battled through 51 fouls, and the Huskies scored 30 points at the free throw line to earn their eighth home win of the season, improving to 14-5 overall and 9-2 in the GLIAC.
“Any win in the GLIAC is a successful night,” Tech coach Josh Buettner said. “These games get very physical when you play a team for the second time. I don’t think we were at our best and there wasn’t much flow in the game. They kept fighting and we need to be sharper down the stretch, but I’m glad we fought and am happy with the win.”
Leading 34-29 at halftime, the Huskies scored the first five points of the second half to jump out to a 10-point advantage. Later in the frame they went on a 12-2 run to balloon the lead to 19. Pete Calcaterra had a block which led to a fast break dunk during the run along with a three-pointer by Adam Hobson and seven free throws off the fingertips of three different Huskies.
Davenport (5-14, 1-9 GLIAC) wouldn’t go away quietly. The Panthers trimmed the margin all the way down to six, using a 9-0 run with 28 seconds left, but it was too late as Marcus Tomashek made four late free throws to ice the game.
Marcus Tomashek hit the 30-point mark for the eighth time this season, scoring a game-high 32 points on 7-for-16 shooting from the field and 16-for-20 from the charity stripe. He added a team-high seven rebounds.
“I just take what comes to me and what the coaches draw up,” Tomashek said. “My teammates are great screeners and great passers, and we all work really well together.”
Adam Hobson was honored before the game for scoring his 1,000th career point on Jan. 18 and added a dozen points on Thursday. Dawson Nordgaard was also in double figures, scoring 11 points with nine coming from the free-throw line.
Tech built a nine-point lead in the first half after back-to-back threes by Marcus Tomashek and Adam Hobson. Both teams made 11 field goals in the opening 20:00. The Huskies hit three more free throws and two more threes for a 34-29 advantage.
Joey Cabana led the Panthers with 23 points while Raishaun Brown added 10.
Tech hosts Grand Valley State on Saturday at 2 p.m. to wrap up the weekend.
