Six Huskies in double figures
SAULT STE. MARIE, Mich. – The Michigan Tech women’s basketball team shot 63.1 percent from the field, came one assist away from tying the program record with 30 assists and scored the most points for a game in the Sam Clayton era to win its third-straight game, handling Lake Superior State 101-52 at the Ronald ‘Bud’ Cooper Gymnasium on Thursday evening.
The Huskies elevate to 8-9 overall and 5-4 in the GLIAC while the Lakers drop their fourth-straight contest for an overall ledger of 5-12 and 2-7 in the loop.
Michigan Tech saw six players reach double-figure scoring, with graduate transfer Janie Tormanen leading the way with 18 points (9-for-11), as first-year guard Ella Mason reached a career-high 15 points (7-for-9) off the bench. Veteran Isabella Lenz (14 points), Maja Kozlowska (13 points), Kendall Standfest (11 points) and Emma Anderson (10 points) rounded out the double-digit scorers. For the second straight week, graduate transfer Kaitlyn Maxwell reached a new career high for the Huskies with nine points in 11 minutes.
“I thought we did a phenomenal job playing inside out from the tip and our post did a good job finishing,” head coach Sam Clayton said. “It just kept rolling from there and everyone came out and executed defensively and overall a great win for us. I love our team and our energy and it’s fun when you’re playing well which we have been the past few games and to come with the confidence and to have everyone see their shots go in definitely helps. “
From the jump, it was all Michigan Tech as the Huskies established the post-play, with Kozlowska and Tormanen scoring the first 12 points for the Black & Gold to lead by eight (12-4) heading into the media timeout. The Huskies continued to dominate, closing the first quarter ahead 25-9, capped by a steal and score by Maxwell with 10 seconds remaining.
The middle two quarters saw Michigan Tech pour in 60 total points, 30 per quarter, shooting 75 percent in the second and 66.7 percent in the third quarter to pull ahead 85-39 heading into the final quarter of action.
Lenz had a team-leading seven points in the second quarter to go with two assists and a steal, with Tormanen adding six points with Dani Nuest and Standfest recording three assists, respectively. Meanwhile, the third quarter showcased Anderson and Kozlowska recording a team-high six points, respectively, with Nuest adding three more assists in the period.
The Huskies bench got into it in the final quarter, as Mason accounted for 10 of the team’s 16 total points, highlighted by turnaround fadeaways in the paint and an acrobatic layup with 6:02 to play that brought the bench to its feet.
Kozlowska scored the final point for the Huskies at the 1:55 mark from the free-throw line, with LSSU’s Maddie Bradford concluding the scoring with 1:22 to go, deciding the contest at 102-51.
Tormanen also led the Black & Gold with eight rebounds as Nuest recorded a team-leading and career-high eight assists, with Lenz close behind with seven.
Grace Bradford led a trio of Lakers in double-digit scoring with 13 points to go with a game-high nine rebounds.
