Big scoring drought leads to MTU Women’s Hoop loss

Lenz paces Huskies with 14 points

HOUGHTON, Mich. – The Michigan Tech women’s basketball team fell to first-year GLIAC affiliate Roosevelt 74-57 after scoring 10 points between the second and third quarter at the SDC Gymnasium on Saturday.

Today was disappointing, to say the least—to come out and score 25 points in the first quarter and then they started going on a run, we had a few turnovers and missed a few shots and from there, it was just a downhill spiral,” said Michigan Tech head coach Sam Clayton. “In the fourth quarter, we fought back similarly against Northern, but we’ve got to play all four quarters—we’ve got to start putting it together.”

Michigan Tech (5-9, 2-4 GLIAC) started strong with 25 first quarter points and the lead, shooting 61 percent from the field with eight points from senior guard Isabella Lenz and six points from junior forward Maja Kozlowska. However, The Huskies went ice cold to end the first half producing just four points to head into halftime tied with Roosevelt (4-7, 2-3 GLIAC) 29-all.

The shooting woes continued out of the break as the Black & Gold went three-for-16 in the third quarter while the Lakers put together its best quarter of the game, pouring in 27 points, including five 3-pointers led by senior guard Luka Malinka with eight points to lead 56-35 heading into the final quarter of action.

The Huskies showed grit in the fourth quarter, outscoring the opposition 22-18 in the final frame with six points from Lenz and five from first-year guard Kendall Standfest. With 3:26 to play, Lenz connected on a layup, cutting the deficit down to 13 points (66-53), although the Lakers would sustain a double-digit lead before a layup by Jayla Turchin with 42 seconds to play decided the game at 74-57.

Lenz led the Black & Gold with 14 points and a team-high eight rebounds. Lenz and sophomore guard Dani Nuest each finished with four assists.

Marie Outlay and Turchin recorded 17 points to lead four Lakers in double-figure scoring, with Lexie Sinclair (12 points) and Malinka (11 points) in the mix. Outlay posted a double-double with her team-leading 12 rebounds.

The Huskies are back at the SDC Gymnasium next week hosting Saginaw Valley State on Thursday (5:30 p.m.) and Wayne State Saturday (noon).
